Lake Forest College US Elections Guide: 2024

PROQUEST & NEWSBANK

We have access to the "big" papers (Washington Post, LA Times, ...) through subscriptions to a couple different ProQuest databases and most of the local papers (Chicago Tribune, Sun-Times, ...) through subscriptions to a couple different NewsBank databases.

Tips for Searching

  • Remember to filter for the date. Databases usually display results most recent to least recent, but if you're tracking down a specific article to beat a paywall it's best search for the date that article was published.
  • Look for slightly different headlines. Newspapers sometime change the headline slightly for online articles to change the way the show up in search engine results.
  • Search for specific candidate names or offices. The more specific you get, the better -- especially for local races.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help! Reference librarians are more than happy to help you with any election-related questions.

OTHER NEWSPAPERS & MAGAZINES

ProQuest and NewsBank are only 2 of our news providers. We also have subscriptions to other newspapers and magazines through services like Nexis Uni, EBSCO Newspaper Source, or directly from the publisher.

It's easiest to find these sources by searching in Primo. A Primo search will bring up results from across our library collections including our news databases so you can see how we might have access to a particular publication. Limited your Primo search to a "Journal Search" can help filter out

Primo Journal Search:

Select "Journals" from the top of the Primo page above the search bar.

Begin typing the name of the publication you're trying to find and select the completed option from the autofilled dropdown menu below the search box.

You can also watch this video to see an example search.

Other Databases:

  • Nexis Uni -- wide variety of publications including international papers (The Times (UK), Der Spiegel, Sydney Morning Herald...)
  • Newspaper Source (EBSCO) -- lots of regional American papers as well as some TV news transcripts, coverage dates can be a little spotty
  • Regional Business News (EBSCO) -- American and international business publications, some full-text, some records only
