Who was the first female student at the College?

The school had separate schools for men and women when it was first founded, and in Lake Forest College: A Guide to Campus Anna Farwell is listed as the first “Alumna” of the school in the class of 1880.

The current fraternities are Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Chi, and Lambda Chi Alpha.

The current sororities are Alpha Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta.

Other fraternities that have been on campus are: Alpha Sigma Kappa, Beta Gamma Chi, Beta Triton, Di Gamma, Kappa Sigma, Phi Pi Epsilon, Phi Delta, Theta, Tau, Kappa Epsilon, Beta Rho, Sigma Pi Sigma.

Who was the first Black professor at the college? 

Nathan Huggins; he taught at the college from 1964-1966.

When did art and music become part of the curriculum?

Art and music became part of the College’s curriculum in 1882. The Lake Forest College school of music opened in 1925.

 Do fraternities and sororities have houses on campus?

They do not have houses on campus. They have lived in houses off campus, but on campus they have lounges in specified dormitory buildings where they can meet.

What is the oldest standing building on campus?

The oldest standing building on campus is Young Hall, built in 1878.

Has the College gone by other names?

The College has had several name changes in its history. Starting out as Lind University (1857-1865), Lake Forest University (1865-1965) and finally Lake Forest College (1965-present).

Who was the first Black graduate of the College? 

 William S. Peyton; he graduated in 1907 with a degree in Chemistry. (The Forester, 1907)

List of buildings no longer standing:

Lake Forest Academy Building: Built in 1859 and located on North campus near Durand Art Institute. The building burned down in 1879.

Alice Home Hospital: Built in 1899, (source: Alice Home Hospital; book located in Special Collections: RA 982. L25 A44 1910) it was the first Hospital in Lake Forest Ill. The building was designed by Frost & Granger, and was used by the hospital until it moved to a new building in 1942 (its current location) called Lake Forest Hospital, which is currently called Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital. (Source Wikipedia and Lake Forest Hospital: 100 years; book located in Special Collections; RA 982. L25 L253 1999) The building was demolished in 1965 after serving as a dorm for the school.

Moore Hall (East House): First built in 1893 by Pond & Pond it was initially called East House. It was the last remaining Lake Forest Academy building until it was torn down and a new Moore Hall was built in 2013. A fire in 1922 destroyed the 3rd floor which lead to the building being remodeled and a fourth floor added. Smoke damage was visible on the brick but the building was otherwise restored. The building’s name changed from East House to Moore Hall in honor of President Moore in 1963.
