How to Use Primo

I've signed in and done my search. Now what?

Primo offers many tools:

  • Refine your results by narrowing them down by:
    • availability (online, peer-reviewed (i.e. schoarly)
    • resource type (book, Ebook, video, article)
    • author
    • date
    • language
    • and more!
  • Click on the title of any item to learn more about it:
    • Where and when it was published
    • Who the authors are
    • How you can access it (online or in print or via I-Share or Interlibrary Loan/Tipasa)
  • Cite it (in APA, MLA, Chicago author-date, and Chicago notes and bibliography style)
  • Email it to yourself, a friend, or your professor
  • Save it to your Primo account and label it with any tag or name you choose
  • Save your searches so that you can run them again

How to Use the Favorites Tool

The favorites tool, which looks like a pushpin, is a new feature for Lake Forest College.

With it, you can:

  • Save results, and then label/tag those results
  • Save searches
  • Set saved searches to run automatically, which can be a great what to track new literature to a research field, or new work by authors.

Save an Item to your Favorites

To use the Favorites tool, sign in to Primo
To save an item from your search, click on the push pin to the right of the items title

To see your saved items, click on the push pin on the far right in the top menu

Go to favorites


To label a saved item, click on add labels and then choose "New"

Save a Search and Repeat it Automatically

To use this tool, sign in to Primo.
You can also watch a short (3 minute) video on using this tool.

To save a search, click on the push pin on the far right of the top menu to see your Favorites


Click on "Search History" and use the push pin to save any searches you'd like to repeat in the future

To have this search run and send you notifications whenever a new item is available that meets the search parameters, select "Turn on notification for this query."
