When to Cite

1) So someone else can learn more (hyperlink rule)

2) To borrow authority (Biden rule)

3) To demonstrate alliances (PB &J rule)

4) To give credit where credit's due (Kanye rule)

5) To stay out of trouble (save-your-hide rule)

Citation Styles

Author-Date styles:

APA (American Psychological Association), Chicago Author-Date

Author-Title style: MLA

(Modern Languages Association)

Footnote style:

Chicago Turabian

Chicago Author-Date: Books

 

Author last name, Author first name. (date) Title of book. Publisher City: Publisher name.

 

Example: Zirin, Dave. (2005) What's My Name, Fool? Chicago: Haymarket Books.

 

Chicago Author-Date: Chapters from edited volumes

Author last name, Author first name. (date). "Title of Chapter." Title of Book. Ed. by editor name. Place of publication: Name of publishing company: pgs

Example: Durkheim, Emile. (2012). "What Makes Sociology Different?" Readings in Sociology, 7th Edn. Ed. by Garth Massey. New York: W.W. Norton: 19-28.

Chicago Author-Date: Journal Articles

 

Author last name, Author first name. (date). "Title of Article." Name of Journal Vol(No): pgs.

Chicago Author-Date: Website

Chicago Author-Date: Movies

 

Director name (dir) and Writer name (writer). (date). Name of Movie. Produced by producer name. Distributor name. Motion picture.

 

Example: Robinson, Phil A. (dir & writer). (1989). Field of Dreams. Produced by L. Gordon and C. Gordon. Universal Pictures. Motion picture.

Chicago Author-Date: Audio Recording

 

Band/artist name. (date). "Title of song." Written by (if different than performer). Name of Album. Studio/Label. Audio recording.

 

Example: Asobi Seksu. (2006). "Thursday." Citrus. Friendly Fire. Audio recording.

Chicago Author-Date: Interviews

 

Interviewee name. (date). Interviewed by Interviewer Name.  (if relevant, where archived).

 

Example: Toynbee, Claudette [pseudonym]. (2011, July 6). Interviewed by Holly Swyers. Archived with the Adulthood Project, Lake Forest College.

What is…

Theory? Undergirding ideas/worldviews that shape how you see your results. Example: a person's identity is socially constructed

Primary source? Something that you will be analyzing, usually using content analysis – something you are using as data

Secondary source? A source that provides insight about the question you are analyzing that you can use to debate against or to support your interpretation
