History Tips
Look at Bibliographies
- Check the sources that the articles you find used. The authors have done a ton of research already, you don't have to start from a blank slate.
- You might find other scholarly articles that fit your topic or primary sources that the authors used that you might want to look at.
- Scan the "Literature Review" section of your articles to find contentious or important works to look for. Historians want to put their work in the context of the rest of the field and will discuss the most important works related to their thesis.
Search with Historical Terms
- Pick search terms that fit the time period you're searching in. The term "World War I" would never appear in a newspaper until after World War II.
