TOKENS

What Are Tokens?

Lake Forest College buys tokens to access material in American Chemical Society and Wiley journals. Tokens allow one-time access. Because tokens cost $15 or more each and are limited in quantity, please help the College conserve them. When we run out of tokens, we run out -- no one can use any for the rest of the semester.

When to Use a Token

We can get the same articles through Interlibrary Loan that we would use a token for. The difference is that tokens offer instant access whereas interlibrary loan can take a few days (although many articles arrive within 24 hours).

We can also often find access to articles using Google Scholar. Always check Google Scholar before using a token or Interlibrary loan. If you're off campus, customize Google Scholar so that it will display results that are accessible through our library access.

Use a token if:

  • You need to read and use the article immediately
  • You could not find free access to the article on Google Scholar
  • You need to read and use the article within a few hours and it's a weekend

Do not use a token if:

  • You have used this article recently and may have saved it
  • You can wait a day (during the week) or over the weekend to read an article
  • You haven't checked Google Scholar yet
