- Your city's public library is a good source for local information.
U.S. Census
2000 and 1990 data
Use American
FactFinder, the online tool for accessing the U.S. Census
- Look at the tables available under "basic facts"
- For more data, go to the "2000 summary file 1" or "1990 Summary
Tape File 1"
- Choose "detailed tables" or "thematic maps"
- In the geographic type box, choose "place"
- Follow the steps to choose your city and topic
1950-1980 data
- Pre-1990 census data is available in books on the tables in the north side
of the reference room.
- For each census year, look for the "Census of the Population." Find the volume(s) for your state.
- Look in the first volume for your state for the table finding guide:
1980 census - page III
1970 census - inside front cover
1960 census - end of the Introduction
1950 census - page VIII
- In this guide, find the topic you want and then look across to find the
right geography (most of your cities will be "places with fewer than 50,000").
This will give you the table number you need. Example table finding guide
- In the main part of the book, find the table for your topic, and locate
your city in the list. Example table
