Lost Items:

There is an $85 charge for each lost item.  This fine reflects a $75 Lost Item Replacement Fee plus a $10 Lost Item Processing Fee.  If the actual replacement cost for the item exceeds $75, the patron will owe the actual replacement cost plus the $10 processing fee.  In some instances, with prior approval, patrons who have lost library items may have the option to purchase new, identical, legally produced copy(s) of lost item(s) and pay the $10 processing fee for each replacement copy. Upon receipt, such replacement copies will be subject to approval by a collection development librarian before they will be accepted and added to the collection.  Fines for lost books will be waived if they are returned undamaged, but the processing fees will not.  Overdue fines for DVDs and Videos are NOT waived.

Damaged Items:

The library makes every effort to note damage before an item circulates.  If an item is returned damaged, the following fines and fees will apply:

Severe damage:
This includes torn or missing pages and plates, torn or missing covers, excessive water damage, active mold or mildew, and/or excessive marks made by permanent pens and highlighters.
Such items can no longer be circulated and used, and will be considered “lost.” The patron will be charged accordingly (please see above).

Moderate damage:
This includes marks made by permanent pens and highlighters, torn pages, excessive dog-earing of pages, and/or some water damage.  The patron will be charged $10 per item.

Mild damage:
This includes pencil marks and/or dog-eared pages.  The patron will be charged $5 per item and will also be asked to erase pencil marks and unfold dog-eared pages.  Patrons who do not erase the marks or unfold the pages will be charged an additional $10 processing fee per item.

Sticky Notes:

Patrons who return books with sticky notes (Post-Its and the like) in them will be asked to remove the notes or face a $10 processing fee per item.

For more information, please contact Kirsten Kinsella, the Head of Circulation.
