Lake Forest College Donnelley and Lee Library Ask Librarian Hours Interlibrary Loan

FIYS 109: Euclid's Elements: Book I

Welcome to your library assignment!

Think of this as a scavenger hunt that will extend for a number of weeks and will teach you how to use the library and its resources.  At the end of this assignment, you will know at least one librarian by name, be able to search for and find books and articles, and will gain an appreciation of daily life circa 300 BCE in Greece, which is during the period following the death of Alexander the Great and is referred to as the Hellenistic Period (323 - 31 BCE). Since Euclid lived and worked in Alexandria, Egypt (part of the Ptolemaic Kingdom), your research will extend to that area also.

Everyone will be assigned to a team:

Team I: The Social Sciences (including government, politics, trade, banking)

Team II: The Arts (including drama, poetry, music, art, sculpture, cookery, clothing)

Team III: The Sciences, excluding Mathematics (but including navigation, astronomy, agriculture)

Each team will:

Research and prepare a 15-minute presentation on the assigned topic during Euclid's heyday (300 BCE in Greece).  This will help the class gain an appreciation and understanding for what Euclid's everyday life might have been like.  Your presentation must include:

A bibliography in MLA style created with RefWorks which will include (per team member):

A self-evaluation/grade and an evaluation/grade for each team member

You must work as a team on this assignment!  While you may search and gather material separately, you must, as a team, decide what to include.  You will hand in your group project and a bibliography for each team member.
