John Steinbeck. How Edith McGillcuddy met R.L.S. (Cleveland: Rowfant Club, 1943).

This book is an example of a mid-20th century fine press, limited-edition book, printed by the Grabhorn Press, San Francisco (#53 of 152 copies).

This short story had appeared a couple of years earlier in a periodical and was reprinted by the Cleveland book collectors' club, the Rowfant Club. "R.L.S." refers to the Scottish 19th century author Robert Louis Stevenson, who had spent time in San Francisco.

The book was donated to the library by Mrs. Charles C. Haffner - who was the daughter of Chicago printer T.E. Donnelley, sister of College Board chair Elliot Donnelley, and mother of trustee Chris Chandler.

This library bookplate replaced the longtime one showing the College seal, perhaps in the new library administration of Martha Biggs '29 who replaced Mabel Powell, librarian from 1901 to 1942.
